In an earlier study, using a different model for enhancing arts education and teacher development in elementary schools, Upitis, Smithrim, and Soren (1999) concluded that profound changes to teachers' practices and beliefs arose when teachers worked directly with artists and experienced the artistic process while making their own art, and that lasting and profound changes occurred for a number of participants (20%) after two years of professional development.
